Fort Hill was built in 1803 and was first used as a church. John C Calhoun and his family moved in to the home in 1825, expanding it fourteen rooms and using the surrounding land as a plantation. After Calhoun's passing, he passed the house down to his three children. Anna, his third child, married Thomas Green Clemson and they eventually took over the home. In 1888, Clemson gave 814 acres of land belonging to Fort Hill to the State of South Carolina for an agricultural college. This college is today named Clemson University, and the school uses Fort Hill as a museum as stipulated in the will.
